Yes, according to a 20-year longitudinal study by Dr. Robert Seigler and his team of researchers.

The research team found that how well a fifth graders’ understands fractions and long division were predictors of how the student would perform in high school algebra and overall math achievement.  This was true even when using statistical controls to look at parents’ education, income, the children’s own age, gender, and other key control features.
